PostPosted: Sat Sep 15, 2007 2:01 am    Post subject: List of Free/GPL Models & Programs Reply with quote

This list is dedicated for listing sites with GNU/GPL models. This topic should probably be sticked and a new one dealing with tutorials should be created as well. The poster, or someone with post editing abilities, of this topic will have to update the topic post every so often to include the links that others have posted in the thread. There is no limit as to how much stuff you can find.

Please, when you are posting the site, please post the part about it being GNU/GPL and where you found it on the site so we aren't completely clueless and dismiss it. This is to ensure that we know they are GNU/GPL so we can go and spot the licensing immediately. Sites with some non-GPL stuff are allowed but as long as you point out which stuff is GPL. It is a rather hassle.

If the authenticity is skeptical, then the said link will be removed to prevent confusion. The people of the forum will have to discover this on their own and post about it so that it can be removed from the list.

If the thread gets too crowded with posts, then one will need to ask a moderator to split the thread so that this one stays clean.

[Edit]This is no longer just a GPL list. Freeware programs that aren't open-source will be listed here as well. Rules from the above still apply if you do find something that could be GPL.[/Edit]

Models -
FlightGear Flight Simulator Aircraft Models
The list below includes MSFS aircraft that have been released under the GNU GPL by their authors.

Animation -
Cryptic Animation Rig -
License is listed under the download section. It'll be right in front of your face.

Modeling -
QuadFractal -
First one at the top. Already checked the source code and verified that it is GPL.

Ray Tracing -

Modeling/Animation/Rendering/Ect. -

Unsorted Programs -
These programs were just discovered and needs to be sorted out. When they'll be sorted out is up to the thread started and/or the people who want to sort it.

Leviathan - Bitrun - Unmass
[Bitrun is a model converter. Unmass is an archive reader. Leviathan is a Final Fantasy 7 monsters database.]

(3D Modeling, animation, and rendering system.)

Drag[en]gine Normal Map Generator
(A tool designed to help you create Geometry Normal Maps.)

More Unsorted Programs -

(a 3D modeling and character animation program that I have written over the past couple of years, not as a commercial endeavor, but because I love 3D graphics, animation, and programming.)

(Terragen™ is capable of photorealistic results for professional landscape visualisation, special effects, art and recreation.)

Visual Terrain Maker
(A 3D-Modeling program allows visually create landscapes (maps) for games or other purposes.)
[Non-Commercial use apparently.]

(A molecular modeling and visualization program for personal computers.)
[It's non-commercial. So don't get your hopes up.]

(A free molecular visualization application for Mac OS X operating system.)
[This is suppose to be the same, or similar, to biodesigner except for the Mac.]
[Can someone confirm the usage on this?]

(A chemical visualization and illustration program with a new graphic interface.)
This program is free now apparently. Incase you can't get access to the registration page, here's the key that is listed there: APyUrblJnYZr

PyMOL Molecular Graphics System
(a Python-enhanced molecular graphics tool. It excels at 3D visualization of proteins, small molecules, density, surfaces, and trajectories. It also includes molecular editing, ray tracing, and movies. Open Source PyMOL is free to everyone!)
[This is under the Python License as listed on the project page.]

Art of Illusion
(A free, open source 3D modelling and rendering studio. It is written entirely in Java, and should be usable on any Java Virtual Machine which is compatible with J2SE 1.4 or later.)

Aztec 3D Modeller
(A 3D Modelling and Animation tool that is intended to provide a decent set of tools for use in the Game development process.)
[Looks like their website is broken. This hasn't been updated in years apparently. It's LGPL for those who want to know ahead of time.]

bCAD for DOS
(A versatile entry level tool for 2D draughting, 3D modelling and photo-realistic rendering.)
[You must be joking. This thing goes back a long way. Hey, on the bright side, it is free so people can knock themselves out with it.]

Behemot Editor
(A graphics program which allows to model and render 3D objects and scenes.)
[BSD License for those who want to know ahead of time.]

Calimax Modeller
[Someone want to translate me the description for this thing is? It says freeware but I'm skeptical.]

(A complete 3Dlandscape generation and visualisation tool. It creates scene description files that are renderedusing POV-Ray (an excellent freeware ray-tracing program).)
[Freeware version, I'm going to guess, is for non-commercial use only. Someone confirm this for me.]

(a 3d modeler, skeletal animator, and a level editor. You can edit the meshes of supported models and make models from sratch. It can produce non-amimatied meshes, skeletal models, and edit vertex frame animation models.)
[GPL for those who want to know ahead of time.]

(A free spline based patch modeler for the Windows environment.)
[Someone want to confirm the usage for this program?]

The IRIT modeling environment
(A solid modeling environment that allows one to model basic, primitive based, models using Boolean operations as well as freeform surface's based models.)
[Download links are located all the way at the bottom of the page. It's like they are trying to hide people from getting it or something.]

(An open standard for LEGO CAD programs that allow the user to create virtual LEGO models and scenes.)
[There are various amounts of programs listed on this site so EULA will differ depending on which program you'll use.]

(MINOS extends the capabilities of your existing 2D-or 3D-wireframe-based systems, so you can take advantage of all the benefits solid modeling offers right away.)
[Can someone find out the usage of this program? I found the EULA to be confusing as hell.]

(A general purpose, easy to learn CAD/drafting program for creating professional quality mechanical designs, house plans, blueprints, schematics and charts utilizing ANSI drawing standards.)

the pov-ray include files page
(This page offers a collection of include files for use with the Persistence of Vision Raytracer, or POV-Ray.)

[Can someone find the EULA/Usage for these programs?]

(A fast, high quality, RenderMan® -compliant renderer designed to produce photorealistic images in demanding production environments.)
[Ok, this thing is free, the only catch is you have to go through a lengthy process to get it. The only thing that isn't free is the support for it costing in at a whooping 250 USD.]
[There is another method of getting it without going through the lengthy process, but it is illegal to even consider doing it. Before I continue, I do not encourage this kind of action. There is a crack out there for Win32 and Win64 that completely bypasses the license. I can not be held liable if you attempt this method.]

Aqsis Renderer
