AllegedlyDead showed me a map called gu3-spaces with an interesting black shading effect around the map model. i've managed to replicate the effect sucessfully.

edges.pk3

what i did was....

-made a simple map of blocks
-built the map
-decompiled the bsp to an ase
-loaded the ase into blender
-joined all the parts into a single object
-removed doubles
-turned the tris into quads
-uvmapped it with a black texture
-scaled it along the normals to make it bigger than the original
-flipped the normals to point inward
-exported the uvmap to an ase
-loaded that ase into gtkr and place it over the map
-built the map again
-disable the lightmaps
-stuck it in a pk3

simple really. :)

made a little change. the boxes looked too flat, so i gave the different faces different colour. it looks a lot better now.

It would help if you included the textures you are using. I get missing textures texture on both Q3A and OA indicated you left out the textures you are using. Other than that, I haven't noticed any difference as of yet. I probably will when I see it with the textures.

As I mentioned on IRC, the map does not work in vertex lightning though, in lightmap it looks awesome. I love the black edge disappearing when you change angles.

i've put a post on mapcentre.com asking if flat lighting can be set in the entities editor. hopefully someone can help me out.

The problem is that if you play the map in vertex lightning it will be 99% black, just like the Open Arena's islandDM map. This renders the map completely useless for people with older computers or for them who uses vertex lightning.

if someone does tell me how to do this, i will be able to use it for more than just cartoon-style maps like this one.

gtkradiant has problems lighting complex meshes, for example i've tried making cave maps, but gtkradiant leaves weird shadows in strange places. ideally i'd give the cave a skin that has lights and shadows built in, but to do this i'd have to stop gtkradiant trying to light it.

ideally i'd make a cave in blender, light it in blender, bake that lighting into the caves skin and then export it to radiant. i'd then tell radiant to light the map for me, but to leave the cave alone, so my pre-lit cave skin shows unaltered.

that would be cool.

latest map

i found a fairly simple solution to the problem, i just built the bsp without a light stage. it now works whether the game is set to use lightmap or vertex.
