Ubuntu is installed and everything seems to be running ok so far...

A little advice before Karmic will be out : the kernel 2.6.31 will introduce the KMS ( Kernel Mode Setting ) also for radeon chips . I don't know if KMS will be enabled by default and/or if it will support the latest rxx chips and/or if it will interferee with ATI proprietary drivers .

Anyway a bit of testing at least with the daily Karmic Live images could be useful ;)

Ok, I've ordered a decent cpu fan. I did have some worries about whether it would clash with the memory sticks, but I've done some research and it sounds like that generally only happens with memory with heat pipes and big coolers, so hopefully I'll be ok.

You didnt state wich operating system you want to use.
You need a power supply of at least 600W for such a system (in case you want to add another gfx card even more).

I'd definetly advise against buying a nV 260 because nV is launching its next gen hardware in a few weeks and the 260 is seriously lagging behind (feature-wise) ATi atm. If you dont want to wait for nV to launch their next tier gfx cards I can only advise you to get the best bang-for-buck card out atm, the Ati 5850(excellent for up to and 1920x1200 happy camping).

But if you wait, nV's cards could make ATi cards even cheaper than they are atm.

naa..i would be getting beat 8 / -2 and he would be fixing his config further (has no idea about autoexec and creating backups of cfgs) to player better. If it went on for ages I would ask what he was doing then I would suddenly find MYSELF at -3 after being chat fragged. Sometimes my score would be as low as the temperature of Scotland on a sunny day :(

I was planning to get XP on it.
But im willing to get windows 7 if thats worth it?
I only need 1 gfx card xD
Think ill wait untill the nV launches the new card and hope the ATI card will be even cheaper and get an ATI one, it all depends on the price.
Id like to haver a card that has HDMI

Does AMD have anything that can compare to the Intel i7?
AMD is still even cheaper then Intel.
Anything else i need to keep in mind?
Thanks again.

p.s. Dont listen to the chicky xD

Stick with XP.. no software provider is stupid enough to make something that runs perfectly on windows 7 and not XP. On the contrary, people report issues with windows 7 frequently. If your skilled with working out problems and like a good challenge then windows 7 might be fine.

Remember external devices are always an option too.. so I would stick with something basic with a good power supply to support extra devices. Perhaps in a year there will be new stuff out which might put the cost of your motherboard down so low you can easily upgrade.

W7 x64 is a must for a serious gamer. XP wont see all your ram.

AMD does indeed have something for gamers, its Phenom II x4 line is absolutley on par with Intel's i7 for gaming. But, if you go amd you should buy the latest 890fx chipset wich is a few weeks away too (the 890gx is out but the g stands for integrated gfx wich in your case would be redundant).

The 890fx chipset will futureproof you more than any other because it will support the upcoming x6 cpu's and the next amd microarchitecture comming next year. It also has usb 3.0 support and sata 6Gbps.

That said, Ive got a Phenom II x4 965 (125W new revision) on an gigabyte ga-ma790fxt-ud5p motherboard and an old nVidia 8800GTS (g92 core, aka 250GTS) and 2x2GB Corsair ddr3 1600MHz RAM. That rig still plays every game quite nicely, on 1400x1050 resolutions. But I am waiting for nV to help lower prices. :) Let the games begin.

If you got more questions be free to ask.

EDIT: oh and if you get w7 home premium, pro or ultimate, you can run xp mode in it. (solves any incompatibility you might encounter [no issues here in more than 6 months tho])

XP , like every 32 bit OS , can't use more than 3GB of physical RAM : and Linux 32 bit too with its default address function.... but it has the capability (if compiled with the correct option ) to address more than 4GB till 64GB

With a full 64bit OS there's not (virtually) any limitation

32 bit -> 2^32 -> 4GiB
64 bit -> 2^64 -> 16EiB ( 1.073.741.824 GiB = 1 EiB )
