ok i got a small notebook.. its running important servers but i have had to use the keyboard sometimes and I make loads of typo's and windows do stuff that shouldn't.

I bought a USB 2 PS2 adaptor but all the keyboards come up as unrecognised device, i have tried 6 PS2 keyboards, none of them will work on my notebook.

The laptop does not have a cd. I can connect an external one to it. The windows disk is still wrapped up. But should I try putting the cd in and see if it recognises a new keyboard? Reason I didnt is because I thought using a usb adaptor -> PS2 keyboard would work without issues

U can try all the PS2 keyboards of this world but nooone will work unless it's explicitely declared by the notebook vendor as compatible with the notebook itself.

The real shit is the notebooks' DRM-like technology ... linux and GNU comunnities had tried hard to final users opening their eyes about it ...

The worst part of it.. the adpaptor i bought was an expensive gold plated thing.. then when i got home i found a normal silver one which would have done the same thing

Whatat does that have to do about keyboards and laptops?

I used to use unix.. but when i seen how much linux and its desktop env slowed me down i stopped using it as a desktop. I switched back to windows XP which of course is superior as a desktop env

I don't say to pass to linux and/or that with linux the keyboard will work ... it should be a hardware coded "feature" .... only the certified keyboards will work.

U could try a live distro to try if the keyboard will work or not with linux ... since there's no CD , u could try with a distro that could stay on a USB memory stick and boot from it.

Anyway , I said only that linux and GNU communities have worked hard when the first DRM-enabled products appeared to instruct final users about the risk of the DRM technologies.

I'm using LXDE atm .... simple , light and easy to use since it displays also all both KDE/GNOME menu entries....

I wish I could understand this :(

My old laptop worked when I plugged in a USB keyboard... but not this one.

It may not seem like a major issue but when you are in the middle of something and press a wrong button and it starts to hibernate words can't express how it feels. Some of the keys are also a different layout. For eg. the control and function keys are swapped.

Just use a USB keyboard (plugged into a usb port) like everyone else.
