Reports from one player, [sXe], is coming in that servers have lag every 12:th second, and it is on all Rainbow Servers. Does anyone else have these issues with server lag?

If yes, on what server, what time?
Try to specify as much details as possible.

Server name, time of day, number of players on the server e.t.c

According to server statistics everything looks fine, also when I personally connect to servers, I do not have that issue and /lagometer 1 shows little noise, as it should.

Things that can interfere on clientside, and make it look like lag for the untrained eye are:
*) Listening to webradio while playing
*) Having an active IRC channel open while playing
*) Viewing a website which uses flash
*) Running antivirus program
*) Running a .torrent client
*) Faulty configuration/setup

Before reporting something as server lag, make sure that you have set the basic settings as follows:
Code::
/snaps 40
/rate 25000
/cl_maxpackets 125
/lagometer 1
/cg_showFPS 1

So if your client settings are ok but you still experience problems, then please report it here so that we can investigate what could be at fault, also include what Operating System you are using.

There is a tool called "mtr" (for Linux) that measures the lag of every node of a connection (see mtr_screenshot.png).

I think it is pretty self-explaining... you start it with

Code::
mtr <target_ip>

and can verify who/what in the chain causes the lag... In mtr_screenshot.png I used the IP of my server as <target_ip> and it measured 17ms as best which is ok

the IP of the RN server is 87.230.26.228 ... so you enter

Code::
mtr 87.230.26.228

and let it run for some minutes/hours.. also while you play... and send the screenshot here or contact your ISP (if the lag happens in top of the connection chain)...

mtr_screenshot2.png is my connection to the RN servers...

...if all this doesn't help.. then SUSE could be the problem... but it's mostly only single players who seem to have problems... so i guess, for now, that it isn't the server...

Well I stick to that the lag is caused by the servers. When I spectate players I notice that they hav the same lag problem for a short time. In addition I hav already talked to some experienced players who also complained the same issue.

Nice tool Jack. I'm running statistics on it now, started 17:04 local time. I'll let it run and see what it finds.

Here is a more detailed explanation howto pinpoint the cause for lag using mtr (or WinMTR winmtr.sourceforge.net/ )

Here is a screen of resource load at this time, here it doesn't seem to be a bandwidth problem as it only utilizes 0.06% of max capacity.

sXe: Can you please record the game for around two minutes, and send us the file, so we can have a look?

I'll try to use the tool Jack´s mentioned for I too have been noticing crap pings for a while in the RN servers. The problem is that many things are going on with my personal connection so I can't tell yet how much, if anything, can be attributable to the servers. I just back what sXe said about more ppl experiencing slowdowns, at least in the 1on1 server and Corkscrew.

I was running that tool for roughly 3½ hours and it got lowest 42 and highest 101, but I would assume spikes came when entering a game. Have been logged on to servers with Open Arena client and have not noticed that lag every 12:th second, not even with default rate of 3000.

We really need to find out whats causing the lags and by providing as much info as possible, we might have a change of finding where the error is.

The question is, was the lag the same before and after the server updates? Is the lag the same on VQ3 Freestyle / Alternate CTF / CTF Rail e.t.c?

Now that is what I call choke!
I know NTL was crap, used it myself when I lived in the UK, didn't know that NTL and Virgin used the same pipes though, explains a lot.

Heh, Virgin bought NTL a while back, that's why. I'm bound to my 12 months contract, don't know what to do...it's never been good, but man, lately it's just unbearable. I think the usual suspects at RN 1on1 already hate me and my lag...Yesterday I couldn't even get a list of servers when firing up OA. What is weird is that speed tests resulsts are not that bad, more or less what I'm paying for, but the latency (is this the right term?) is ridiculously bad.

You should contact your Virgin ISP (pun intended) and tell them to fcku off!
On the other hand, when you are talking to them, tell them to disable error-correction on TCP/IP, you have the right to request that as a customer and it should give you better latency/ping.

I think it was disabling the error correction of the DSL connection since the TCP/IP protocol does it anyways and it is redundant when both do it...

or so...

Here in Germany they advertise it even with some buzzword.. I think "Fast Path" or what they call it...
