I need a little help doing runs with rockets, like on minions-run9. :) I think I've just spent too long in maps using no weapons I just make a complete mess of it. If I hit down a small angle I find it difficult to know where I land to continue jumping.

If my angle makes me too high I gain little speed.

The worst part is I have a bad habit of doing key presses that is required if I were to turn and strafe backwards. Are there any demos or movies that might help me a little? They don't have to be all that good as I can rarely do 3 jumps and keep or increase my speed. Quite often I lose speed :)

Well this seems to of gone a little off topic so I will answer the current topic first, then the original :).

What is considered cheating in any game I think you have to base on what the majority of top level players consider cheating as opposed to your own feelings, for example in counter strike you will get banned from many servers for bunny hopping, even though it requires a lot of skill (much more than in quake 3), and anyone can do it, and while I do not agree with this (imo there's nothing wrong with bunny hopping) you have to accept it's generaly not accepted. In quake 3 generaly anything goes - scripts, any config, bright skins...

Now that's the rule I think should be abided by for every fps, my personal view of quake 3 - if a console command exists and you are able to use it just like any other player then it's not cheating, and if you don't like it there are mods and specific server settings that restrict commands, stick to those servers. Scripts as well, they are not restricted in baseq3/baseoa and so should be allowed, it's impossible to use anything more than a rj script in a dm anyway and imo it's better to use your hands in 90% of those cases. Now bright skins are a different issue, as you are actualy using modified game files - I WOULD consider this cheating, though bright skins are so accepted (and id software even released some official ones for quake4) by the community that I have no problem with them (though see my cs example again, in counter strike I would consider them cheating).

Okay, now defrag is a completley different kettle of fish. You are going round a pre-set run with nothing changing (unlike dm) so you could script everything. Now defrag is all about how skillful you are able to move so scripts are generaly considered cheating (although rj scripts are occasionaly allowed in competitions), however defrag competitions always have clearley laid out rules telling you what you can and can not do, so it's at the discretion of the competition setter (although there's is a generaly accepted single rule set for 99% of competitions).

Okay, on to using keel/tankjr over orb :). The reason people use the larger models is simple - they are easier to see and also you are more likley to hit them as I think subcontiously if you are against (for example) orb, you will fire at what you can see as opposed to where you know the hit box roughly to be, especialy with those 0.1 second snap rails, you will not in that time realise that the model is orb and not bother aiming down, you will aim down at what you see.

Now as regards w3sp - he is frequently accused of cheating due to an attitude he holds when questioned about it, as well as some of his runs being 'too good for a human to do' in some peoples eyes. Also the movement in some of his demos apperas to some peopel to look scripted. The reason he was banned from thhe last dfwc however was due to using a fake nick, nothing to do with cheatign allogations. He has never been proven to be cheating.

Right, movies - off the top of my head you should watch these (all are great):

Freestyle:
mellow darkness
dreaming illusion
cattuthaj jhana
a team tricking video like event horizon, you choose which (I found them interesting at first but now boring)

Runs:
the dfwc04 video by Bliccer
w3sp strafes
The Enlightenment (maybe I'm biased with this one as before seeing it I didn't even know what strafe jumping is)
you also have lots of old stuff like cetus the movie

Frags:
annihilation
castor fiber (the quake3 movie obviously, not the cs one of the same name =))
the badge 3
fucking french frogs
mercurial

So that's a list off the top of my head, there are several more excelent videos but my mind's blank right now, just pick any of the above you havn't seen (I tried listing them in order of greatness in each category) and you really won't be dissapointed. You can find all these videos along with just about every other quake3 video ever made on own-age.com (occasionaly the site goes down so don't worry if it is).

edit: Oh, and about everyone using the same config - if you mean for certain settings such as maxfps then yes, there's nothing wrong with that and this system is often used. If you mean enforcing a set fov, mouse sensitivity etc. then that's a really stupid idea imo as people get used to one setting and so this would only be biased and stop people entering. Any decent player would not be able to play at anywhere near their normal standard if things like this were affected, and the rules would put the people who happen to use a similar config to the one chosen for the competition at a great advantage. Using fov130, say isn't cheating as anyone can use it, so why enforce fov 110 if 130 isn't better? And then why 110, everyone should use the default setting of 90! :D. An exception to this is any fov over 130 as then you can see through walls, but that's an extreme case and genuinly would put people used to using other fovs and a disadvantage.

RAZ3R, I have to say, nice post. I completley agree with you on this matter. There are similar threads in the oa forum, think you should voice there also since devs that are unexperienced players want to force things like max_fps 90 or even 85 and such things. Such ideas can kill a game like oa.

noone can force 85 fps on you. Just goto the servers you know and trust without telling people what they should and should not be doing. Perhaps they will change their opinion when are more aware.

It doesnt earn you respect by patronizing and confusing others either.
