Well, my main harddisc on my desktop pc is dying. Comp started out freezing for a bit, while remapping the broken sector to some reserved space, and S.M.A.R.T showed up a lot of reallocated sectors. It started out slow at first, but now it gets faster and faster every day, it was at 140 days ago, today at 178 and my comp is only running like 2-3 hrs an evening during the week. So i backed up my shit to an external drive and will send this to the seller, it should be covered by waranty. They grant 2 years, that thing was bought on 29th dec 2011 and i received it just at the beginning of january 2012.

However, i have one question. How do i prevent this shit in the future?
I did not overclock my system, i did not add new components to stress the power supply, i did not heat up the system (hd temperature was between 25°C and 29°C every time i ever checked it, main board temp never above 35°C), i did not copy lots of files even, it was rebooted 402 times, only 2324hr after about running for like 300 days. my notebook hdd has 3-4 times that much life time and up time and is perfectly fine. I did not undervolt it, overvolt it, spill coke, beer, coffee over it, put my housecat in the case, kicked the case while drunken, hit it, stopped the cooling fan for fun, tried random BIOS settings i didnt know what they were good for..... nothing.

oh yea: beside that thing that my hdd is dying, i love my system and no hardware problems whatsoever. so should i in the future just disable harddisc cache? i also have heard, its really strainfull on discs to use power save, because of all that spinning up and down when going idle? or just avoid a certain manufacturer?

There only are 2 manufacturers left. Yay, more power to capitalysm.

Anyway, yeah beside physical shock, the most straining thing for spindle harddrives are spin-up times.

Personaly, I don't give a damn if a drive dies, and there isent much you can do about them dying anyway. So stop vorrying and start over-provisioning. The only way to avoid data loss is backup.
