W1Z thanks also I think you are right with network traffic. I'm using 1,2 Mb DSL and this can be at xmas time a problem. I'm moving in April to new flat and then ... 12Mb is minimum :-).
The main problem is the number of users connected , not the speed : quake3/OA are based on UDP protocol which has not any assurance of delivery ( no ACK/NACK or RETRANSMIT support at the protocol level ) , so UPD packets can be easily lost, expecially with a high trafficated and/or congestioned network. The most important parameters for net gaming are the percentage of packet loss and the jitter : I've found this test much more useful for classifing network quality www.pingtest.net/
And anyway UDP usually has a lower priority over TCP.
Still about network speed : a 12Mb line is usually much more efficient than a 1.2Mb line , but not for the absolute speed. A 1.2Mb line is usually much more "populated" ( more users ) than a 12Mb line, so the first one is much more prone to congestion.
So if you take care of this factors - number of users , absolute speed and the xmas period - you can easy understand why the connection is bad
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
see you in 2010
That's mean you will not read this till the next year :D ... anyway Happy New year to you too :D
