Two ideas and nothing else. You, the reader of this thread, need to determine the pros and cons, benefits and doubts, and yin and yang of these ideas. I will personally not get involved because I've been thoroughly thinking about whatever comes to mind. Now I'm letting everyone else use their brains so that I don't have to.

The following are connected in some way or another.

Separating the Weapons and Powerups from the game code to a manageable scripting langauge like LUA or something similar.

Replacing the model format with one which allows external animations. Something similar to the Unreal Tournament games.

if separating the weapons for it to be more worth while would need much more seperated. pm_airmove and so forth too. various other parts too like hud and crosshair. it kinda makes me think why not just re write ioq3 to have every single useful to mod part scripted? if you do it though.. and have lua scripts pretty much replacing ui, cgame and game.. meow

sounds like work with an unsure benefit.

what will you get besides easier modding - and everyone still being dependent on the development of the "core" game?

it could be good for performance, but normal mods can also do the trick.

I couldn't agree more and I know which model format it should be, Doom3's md5. Xreal, which like ioquake3 evolved from quake3, has implemented this so it's entirely possible that it could be ported to ioquake3.

Not only would it be good to use md5 for the models, it wouldn't hurt to use it for the player characters too.
