I've got a little nephew who is 14 months old and he loves playing with computers, but tends to end up pressing random keys till something goes wrong. To let him have some fun without damaging anything I plugged a usb dual analogue joypad into my laptop and fired up openarena. He really enjoyed this, but couldn't get used to the controls. I had the left joystick set up to look left/right/up/down and the right one to move forward/back and strafe left/right. Sadly this meant that he spent a lot of time staring at the ceiling and going in circles. I've given this a bit of thought and I think that it would be simpler if a joystick simply made the player move backwards and forward and turn left and right. I'd have both joysticks set up to do the same thing so it didn't matter which one he grabbed. I'd also set up all of the keys on the pad just to fire the gun.

While this would make it a lot easier for him to navigate it would mean that he'd be unable to look up and down. This would be ok as long as the maps were designed with this in mind and were strictly flat with no stairs or different levels. I could also fill the map up with lots of different weapons and powerups so that there were loads of interesting things for him to pick up.

Sound like a good idea?

ah yeah, you could give the whole map it the "good old" feeling, like it had in duke nukem, which could also be finnished without looking up and down. it had autoaim! directing your pistol shots at enemies above or below you!! =D

I like youngers grow up with toys made from wood. Untreated wood. Maybe oak, or pine tree. They should attend a playschool in a forrest with with a sandbox and everything. I don't think they need computers yet.

Oh btw: how did we get to this topic?
We should focus more on the topic, or else...

Peter: Well, I'm gettin' something really special too. And by special I don't mean special like that Kleinaman boy down the street.
More special like... like Special K, the cereal. Hey, what do they do with the regular K? And for that matter, what ever happend to K. Ballard?
You know, if you said mallard and you had a cold, it would sound like ballard.

Brian: Do you listen to yourself when you talk?

Peter: I drift in and out.

A nowaday computer working at high frequency produces an emission of microwaves and I'm not necessarily meaning the mu-Waves produced by a Wi-Fi tranceiver.
